Spring continues

Blog4_3_22_21

It’s Monday 3/22/21 and it is another sunny day. It is just above freezing so far (34 degrees) (@ 8AM); but it looks to be another spectacular day. Yesterday it was in the mid-50s all afternoon.

It took me two days; but I got the deer fencing up and finished around my new garden space yesterday, as well as all three bird bath drippers up and running. (pic 2)

I even planted a pot of purple potatoes – that pot inside the fence (pic 1). I plan on putting the vining plants (pumpkins and cantaloupes) in mounds along the back part of the garden, so that they grow out towards the woods. But planting them is a few weeks away, as our last frost date is April 30th.

Only really cold weather crops need to be planted now. I need to plant the peas next, but I need to dig out the grass and amend the soil first. I’m thinking along the that left fence wall is where the peas will go.

I need to go through all my seed packages and figure out what goes in next after the peas are planted. The lettuces and other cold weather greens will go back into the flower boxes on top of my garden bench. The bench sits on my back patio near the cellar entrance. (Pic 3) This area also needs to be fenced in.

Back garden patio

I over winter all my potted perennials on this garden patio. They all need to be cleaned out and placed in their summer locations.

The Hügelkultur garden bed is getting tall (pic 1) – no thanks to the turkeys – who kept scratching it flat every time I put stuff on it. It was so much fun watching the turkeys yesterday after I finished putting up the fence. They stood there staring at the fence wondering why they couldn’t get into their favorite scratching area. I will be adding a layer of wood mulch over that carboard for a new pathway as well as wood much to that Hügelkultur garden bed. After the wood mulch is the soil and compost before I can plant in this hill.

I will clean out and add to the round perennial bed around the Ginkgo tree. The turkeys have already done damage to the Ginkgo tree – they stripped the new leaves – I hope it comes back.

Today I plan on getting some more deer fencing installed around my wisteria pergola to keep the turkeys off my back patio. This is the second year for this netting here. It worked really well last year.

April 1st is next Thursday, and I need to prepare and hang the oriole feeders. The Ruby Throated hummingbirds are on the move. According to the migration maps (hummingbirdcentral.com); the hummers haven’t left the deep south yet. The hummingbird feeders will go out around the 15h of April. I usually see my first hummer around the 25th of the month.

It’s 3 weeks later from the first part of this blog post.

I stopped writing to go and do yard work and haven’t gotten back to it until now. I gave myself an awfully bad arm sprain that day. I have been out of commission for the last couple of weeks because of that injury. But Spring Continues on without me.

I also started a part time job as a hostess. I’m really getting my steps in; but I have been wiped out after each day at work. There is nothing left for gardening. I just don’t bounce back like I use to. Getting older is down wright frustrating at times!

So Now I’m playing catch up in the garden. I did get most of the deer netting up around the side garden where my hostas are planted. This area has to be netted since the deer regularly ravage my hostas, trumpet vine, and other flowers I’m trying to grow there if this area is not netted.

Thanks to the turkeys crashing through the old deer netting; I have to repair some of the netting I already have up. The old deer netting is much finer than the new netting and the turkey’s just walk-through old stuff. I bought the old netting decades ago, and never used it until last year. The new netting is much heavier (see pic) and they haven’t touched this netting as of yet. I haven’t gotten the deer netting up around the back garden patio yet. (above pic with garden table)

Daffodils through the new deer netting.

There are hostas planted around the trumpet vine (left side) as well as around the generator box.

Small naturized spring flowers in the front yard – originally only plated around the tree.

I did have a chance to clean out most of my perennial pots and the back garden patio is shaping up. These pots will move around all over may various patios as they mature and come into bloom.

These pots (and the patio) are clean out. The pots are ready to be moved to summer locations.

Just a few more pots to clean out then they all are ready to be moved to their summer locations.

The Hügelkultur garden bed hasn’t been touched since I was injured. No damage so far from the turkeys to this older deer netting. But I will be reinforcing this netting with a roll of 4’ heavier deer netting to keep the turkeys. I also have to add more soil to the Hügelkultur bed as I have six cauliflower plants ready to be planted in there. Maybe this week. I need to cut in an area for my pea and broad bean seeds. They will be trellised. I’m thinking on the left side of this garden bed, so as to not shade the center plants. The pumpkin and cantaloupe seeds will be planted in mounds along the back side.

Daffodil and a single white crocus.

Well enough for now.

I hope to be more regular with these posts.
